FEEL SLAVONIA!

Small hills covered in forests, lakes and rivers, numerous hiking trails and excursion sites make Slavonia a destination for both recreation and staying in the nature. Apart from the Nature Park and the Geopark Papuk as one of the most important mountaineering sites, there are also other mountains appropriate for hiking. All these natural phenomena can be found in the preserved natural areas along the big rivers of Drava, Sava and the Danube as well as numerous picturesque vineyards. You can visit all these natural sites but also those of historic and cultural importance during a bike ride on the marked and non-marked cycling routes, while the abundance of fish species as well as the riches of the game in the hunting grounds attract lovers of hunting and fishing to come here.

CYCLOTOURISM

Well-made cycling routes in Slavonia invite you for an active adventure in discovering this area. Cycling through Slavonia, cyclotourists can visit numerous tourist sights entered in the tourist maps and journeying is not difficult because it is all in the valley, except for a few mild ascensions contributing to the dynamics of the journey. There are two international EuroVelo routes passing through Slavonia – number 6 known as the Danube route that is 150 km long and EuroVelo 13 that is 180 km long the route of which goes along the Drava River.

Along these two routes, cyclists can select the state route no. 1 'Drava' or route no. 2 'Sava'. There are many marked and non-marked local routes in all the counties, both those intended for road and trekking bicycles and those for mountain bike users.

HUNTING AND FISHING

The richness of flowing and standing waters, wetlands, lowlands and hill forests make excellent hunting and fishing conditions. Some of the fishes that you can catch in the Slavonian rivers are carp, catfish, perch, pike and sturgeon, while hunters cannot resist the rich Slavonian oak forests. Hunting a boar, deer or roe in the largest pedunculate oak forest in this part of Europe is an unrepeatable experience.

Small game hunters will find a pheasant, snipe, duck, quail, goose or rabbit here. After hunting, you can rest in the hunting lodges, while new strength can be found in the delicious gastronomic treats of Slavonia and Srijem.

NATURE PARKS

Nature and hiking lovers will find their second home in Slavonia. One of the mountains rising from the once Pannonian Sea is Papuk called the most beautiful mountain of Slavonia. This nature park under the protection of UNESCO, along with numerous activities, provides its visitors with an adrenaline adventure in the Duboka Park and, after a dose of adrenaline, in the lowlands you will find Kopački rit, one of the best-preserved floodplains in Europe.

It is located in the corner made by the Danube River and its tributary, the Drava. Depending on the water level, the waters of those two rivers incessantly shape and change the appearance of Rit (marshy land), creating a most beautiful mosaic of lakes, channels, swamps and barriers, flooded forests, reeds and wet meadows.

SLAVONIAN FORESTS

SLAVONIAN FORESTS

Forests represent one of the greatest natural treasures of Croatia. Particularly known for their conservation and quality are the Slavonian pedunculate oak forests. The Slavonian pedunculate oak became world-renowned in mid-19th century, at the time particularly praised as an excellent material for barrel staves in France. However, for humans forests have always been and meant a natural refuge from worries and the everyday stresses. Enjoying the fresh air, the forest scents and the sounds of the birds are only some of the benefits provided by this naturally preserved region.

How important forests are for the Slavonians is also shown by the fact that for already 19 years a festival titled ‘Days of Slavonian Forests’ take place in Našice (Dani slavonske šume). This traditional tourist, cultural, ecological, entertainment and recreational event invites all visitors to celebrate the beauty and power of the Slavonian forests and its craftsmen.

DRAVA RIVER

There are not many water oases left in Europe, where there are sleepy traditional villages in a pristine nature. One of such remaining green beauties is the Drava River that is rightly called the green heart of central Europe. The area along the flow of the Drava River is listed in the UNESCO Cross-border Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube adorned by abundant species and habitats and the full biological variety of the landscape.

That the Drava is always equally charming is well-known by adventurists, anglers, cyclists, weekenders and hikers who regularly find adrenalin, peace and inspiration on its white beaches and islands and on the trails that follow it. You will awake from the Drava dream only by the scent of the freshly fried Drava fish that you can savour here, prepared tastefully in a delicious homemade way in a restaurant here.
