THE DANUBE AND SAVA

The main place among the natural attractions belongs to the Danube, a river flowing through the greatest number of countries in the world and standing out as one of the globally most important cruising rivers. The area of the county along the Danube is also a part of the largest natural area in Europe, the global Mura-Drava-Danube Biosphere Reserve. Along the embankments of the Danube, there is one of the most popular long distance cycling routes in Europe passing, EuroVelo 6.

Of great importance is also the longest Croatian Sava River as one of rare large European rivers preserved in natural condition. The Sava is important as a river passing through four countries, connecting three capitals, i.e. Ljubljana, Zagreb and Belgrade, and standing out with its originally picturesque lowland landscape and villages that have preserved their autochthonous architecture.

BIRD WATCHING CENTRE

The Bird Watching Centre in Nijemci can be found at several locations that you must visit if in Nijemci. You can start from the Arboretum Park on the embankment of the Bosut in the centre of Nijemci where you can see many interesting plants. By land or by water, you can get to the Sopotac excursion site, another point of the Bird Watching Centre in Nijemci. The Saint Catherine (Sveta Katarina) boat sails along the Bosut River from the Arboretum Park up to the Sopotac excursion site. On foot, by bike or by car, you will get to the Sopotac excursion site along the themed informational trail equipped with 30 informative panels and six smart benches. Tourists can learn a lot about the flora and fauna of the Nijemci Municipality by means of the informative panels. The bird fauna of the Nijemci Municipality consists of a total of 89 species. The most famous birds of the Nijemci Municipality are the black-crowned night heron, squacco heron, grey heron, great white heron, the black and the white stork, white-tailed eagle, the Eurasian spoonbill, black kite, common kingfisher, sand martin, purple heron and the little owl.

The Sopotac excursion site is located near a forest, surrounded by granges (salaš), arable land and the Bosut River. The excursion site is equipped with restrooms, summer houses, observation posts, a themed children’s playground, outdoor fitness equipment for adults and disabled persons in wheelchair, benches and baskets and a pier for the tourist ships and boats as well as parking places for cars and buses. Bird watchers have binoculars, telescopes and bird watching manuals at their disposal.

Vinkovci are not only another Slavonian town where you can admire the Baroque buildings, ride a bike, take a stroll along the river and enjoy the abundant Slavonian cuisine. People have lived and worked here for as many as 8,000 years.

TASTES OF SRIJEM AND SLAVONIA

The tastes of Srijem and Slavonia is a project created as a result of the cooperation with the owners of hospitability facilities, the association of the chefs of the Vukovar-Srijem County and expert associates, Ljubica Gligorević, an ethnologist in the Vinkovci Municipal Museum, and Maja Žebčević Matić, an ethnologist in the City Museum of Požega. Actively involved in the project are eight hospitality facilities (rural households, hotels, restaurants), working under the recognisable logo and the prescribed hospitality and tourist offer.
