VUKOVAR - SRIJEM COUNTY

Siniša Uštulica

Where the Valley and the Hills Merge

This valley surrounded with the Danube and Sava and fed with six other rivers is the cradle of the oak forests and vineyards, of bread and wine, kulen and brandy, ducats and Šokadija! The Vukovar-Srijem County is the easternmost Croatian county where the Slavonian plains and the Srijem hills meet but also a place of culture, history and commerce where the East and West have met since time immemorial. In the rich history that in this region goes 8,000 years back, it is difficult to single out what is most valuable, most interesting and most special. Some parts of the historic mosaic and heritage, due to its importance, have grown outside of its borders and became a part of the European and world heritage.

VUČEDOL

Get to know

The archaeological site of Vučedol is situated along the Danube embankment and is one of the most important Eneolithic sites. What makes it special is the fact that, due to the value of the finding and possible determination of the profile of an entire manifestation, it gave the name to an Eneolithic culture, the Vučedol culture, at the same time being its starting point. In the deepest layers, there are the preserved traces of the oldest Neolithic culture called the Starcevo culture (Starčevačka).

Nevertheless, the continuous and intertwined life in Vučedol can be followed from the times of the Eneolithic, when for 700 years the Baden, Kostolac and Vučedol cultures alternated. Vučedol achieved its greatest peak certainly at the time of the Vučedol culture the duration of which lasted from 3,000 to 2,200 BC. The material culture of Vučedol, from which standing out is particularly the ceramic production, with its extraordinary technological quality and aesthetic values, speaks of a highly developed civilisation. The most famous ceramic vessel is the Vučedol dove, a richly decorated vessel in the shape of a bird.

SRIJEM VINEYARDS

Taste

These most beautiful vineyards, with Ilok as its centre, are located in the easternmost part of this county, on the southern and south-western slopes of Fruška Gora. Not seldom is it called the Ilok vineyards and thanks to a large number of sunshine hours, hills that are from 200 to 250 metres high and the permeable soils on loess not keeping moisture, the vineyards produce high quality grapes. The grapes make superb globally marketed wines.

The Ilok wine route is above all interesting and is certainly different from the classic wine road offer because almost all the wineries are concentrated in the town. The wineries themselves, the cellars and the family wine farms differ according to the production tradition, assortment and the type of the cellar. Start your wine roads in Stari podrumi (Old cellars), the greatest attraction in the centre of Ilok and discover why the ancient Romans called this town ‘Delicium mundi’, i.e. ‘The Relish of the World’.

ELTZ CASTLE

Get to know

The Vukovar Castle of the Counts of Eltz is one of the biggest and most beautiful examples of feudal secular architecture in the Republic of Croatia. Its Late Baroque and Classicist features, likable Neo-Baroque ornaments on the main façade turned towards the Danube and the large park and the noticeable size of all the buildings of the castle complex provide the visitor with a wonderful experience of the harmonious blending of the architectural exterior and interior.

The Eltz family counts came to Vukovar from Germany after purchasing the manor in Vukovar in 1736. The first proprietor of the Vukovar estate was Anselmo Kazimir von Eltz whose name is engraved on the doorway arch of the main yard entrance into the castle from the yard side saying: ANSELMUS COMES-MDCCL-(1750). The counts of the Eltz family in Vukovar resided on their estate from 1736 until 1945. The castle houses impressive exhibits of the Vukovar Municipal Museum.

ODESCALCHI CASTLE

Get to know

In Ilok, one of the most beautiful towns in this part of Europe, picturesquely situated between the powerful Danube River and the Srijem vineyards on the slopes of Fruška Gora, there is the Odescalchi Castle. The Odescalchi Castle is an impressive structure created on the foundations of the Court of Duke Nikola of Ilok from the 15th century.

Namely, as a compensation for the assistance in freeing Ilok from the Turks, Emperor Leopold donated the mediaeval Nikola’s castle with the entire Ilok estate, which at the time covered the larger part of Srijem, to Pope Innocent XI Odescalchi, i.e. to his princely family. Pope’s nephews, aristocrats from Italy, expanded the castle and changed its style on several occasions ending in Baroque and Classicist style. Beneath the castle, they made quite a modern wine cellar for the time, which gave a strong impetus to wine-growing and wine-making. After 1945, the Odescalchi left their Ilok estate; their descendants have been a part of the Italian nobility to this day and live near Rome. Today the Odescalchi Castle houses the Ilok Municipal Museum and its exhibition.
