Hilly and Green Slavonia

The Virovitica-Podravina County is a county breathing with full lungs. The preserved natural values, the Drava River and the Geopark Papuk, the Slatina sequoia, but also the most beautiful castles of the Janković and Pejačević families that left traces of a rich tradition of the noblemen in space and the tradition of living, represent only a part of what this county offers. Nature lives here through the entire relief – plains, rivers and hills. The Virovitica-Podravina County is Slavonia that surprises – a hilly and green Slavonia, Slavonia made of volcanic rocks, forest waterfalls and plant and animal world residing there. Lovers of nature and peace will most certainly find their kingdom here. Noblemen, who built their castles and mansions here and left indelible traces in the lifestyle of the region, found their empire here as well.

COUNT’S EDUCATIONAL TRAIL ON JANKOVAC

Feel

The educational trail was built in the most beautiful part of the Jankovac forest park near the mountain lodge, Jankovac Lakes and the Skakavac waterfall. The trail got its name after the noble Count Josip pl. Janković, the first person who realised the aesthetic values of the landscape and the valley. Papuk is built mostly from eruptive rocks but some places of the mountain are covered by limestone layered sediments. Jankovac emerged precisely on such spots on the northern hills of Papuk, at an altitude of 475 metres. Jankovac is surrounded by beautiful forests, particularly beech, containing very valuable trees.

Stairs, wooden pedestrian bridges and handrails enable visitors to see the most beautiful views of Jankovac, while the educational trails along the path tell stories about the natural, cultural and historic sights.

PEJAČEVIĆ CASTLE

Get to know

The Town of Virovitica hides a tourist pearl of Slavonia – the Pejačević Castle, whose construction lasted for four years starting in 1800. It was built where there used to be a ruin of a mediaeval burg by Count Antun Pejačević. The castle is enclosed by a dry moat that on the northern side is bridged by a brick bridge. Surrounded by a park, the Pejačević Castle is the main sight of the Town of Virovitica today.

It has Baroque and Classicist features and is surrounded by a harmonious park, a protected park architecture monument. Within the castle, there is the Virovitica Municipal Museum where visitors can view the cultural, historic, ethnographic, archaeological collection, art and documents. The Museum has approximately 5,000 exhibits of which 880 are a part of the permanent exhibition presenting the life in the Virovitica area from the Early Stone Age until the first decades of the 20th century.

SLATINA PEARL

Taste

In Slatina, at the very transition from the 19th into the 20th century, there used to be the first sparkling wine factory whose founder and owner was duke Schaumburg-Lippe, a German landowner. He purchased the estate encompassing the land with large forest surfaces, vineyards, orchards and various farm facilities in 1841 from the Pejačević family. In the great cellar, from 1864 to 1912 there was a factory producing sparkling wine from the Kadarka grape variety.

Already in the first year, 2,000 bottles of sparkling wine were produced but because it could not be transported and because of the high price it sold poorly. When in 1866 Otto Rockhror from Germany became the manager, he organised the cellar, procured new equipment and started investing in marketing. Rockhror technologically separated the production of wine, beer and sparkling wine. This was a time when the factory was visited by eminent guests and students and the wine way exhibited in Zagreb and sent to Germany. Already in 1898, 15,860 bottles of sparkling wine and 697 hectolitres of wine were produced. Nowadays, that very cellar continues to produce sparkling wine entirely naturally and manually, according to the Dom Pérignon production method.
